The south coast of Western Australia is blessed with many awe inspiring natural wonders. Tick one off your bucket list by joining a film crew onboard their expedition vessel as they venture to witness one of the marine worlds most spectacular events, the seasonal gathering of killer whales at Bremer Canyon.
Each year between January and April, the deep submarine canyons off Bremer Bay become a magnet to rarely encountered marine species. Endangered sea birds, giant squid, great white sharks, enormous sunfish, blue whales and of course killer whales, all converge in this remote section of ocean to hunt, breed and socialize.
Five Day Killer Whale Expedition
Discover Bremer Canyon
This is a genuine south coast adventure!
Join us on a 5 day, 6 night all inclusive expedition that will see you spending daylight hours observing and filming an incredible variety of wildlife ranging from killer whales hunting their quarry (of other whales) to viewing live stream imagery of sharks, swordfish and giant squid, from hundreds of metres below the expedition vessel.
Each expedition is guided by wildlife filmmaker Dave Riggs who first recognized the significance of this extraordinary place some 15 years ago. In 2013 he co-produced a documentary that focused on the incredible marinelife of Bremer canyon and the mysterious death of a tagged great white shark. The questions that ensued ultimately led to the recognition of Australia's largest known killer whale aggregation. Commissioned by ABC Television and Smithsonian channel, 'The Search for the Oceans Super Predator' was subsequently viewed by millions of people from around the world. Dave received an influx of inquiries from people wanting to visit it for themselves so in 2015 he joined forces with marine expedition company Naturaliste Charters. To date, he has amassed over 300 excursions to the site.
With an estimated seasonal population of over 300 killer whales, the Bremer canyon is an area of particular importance to this most dynamic aquatic marine creature. The killer whales target other whales but have also been seen 'stealing' giant squid from the mouths of bull sperm whales .
Throughout the summer months, deep diving beaked whales are prevalent and are hunted on a daily basis by the cooperative pods of killer whales. Blue whales migrate through the area from late summer and the killer whales keep an 'ear' on their progress. Blue whales are the loudest creature on the planet and their haunting songs can be heard by the killer whales for miles.
Meat from killer whale victims inevitably falls towards the seafloor, attracting all manner of deep sea creatures on its descent. On a film shoot in season 2020 we filmed a giant squid estimated at well over 10 metres in length. The seafloor 900 metres below the surface is literally a 'boneyard' of deceased whales, creating an extreme ecosystem that thrives with no input from the sun. Green eyed sharks, deep water rays and giant crabs all feast on the abundant food source that emanates from above.
Evenings are spent onshore as a group residing on a 10 acre property with expansive views of the ocean atop spectacular Point Henry peninsular. A maximum of 8 guests per 5 day expedition ensures a personalized experience like no other. With a well appointed kitchen, 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms, this unique secluded residence lends itself to our exclusive week long expeditions.
